Cindy didn’t drive straight back to Stacey’s. They swung around to the same neighborhood where she had found a better vantage point so that Anthony could pick up his car. He followed them back. She and Tom kept Connor in the car with them, not wanting to move him unnecessarily before Tom had a chance to fully assess his wound. They didn’t have Anthony in the car with them for long, but for how brief it was, it was incredibly uncomfortable. The only thing Tom said to his brother was, “Keep pressure on the wound,” while motioning to Connor’s leg.

Cindy could feel the tension in the air between the two brothers. She was glad when Anthony got out to get his own car.

Connor occasionally moaned in pain, but he didn’t make too much noise. Tom watched the mirrors. “They haven’t come after us,” he said. “I think once we were out of their neighborhood, they stopped caring.”

“How’d you sneak up on us like that?” Connor said. “How’d you even find us?”

“Cindy tracked you until the security footage ran out,” Tom said. “She also looked into Second City Skulls territory, and the security footage happened to run out right on the outskirts of one of their neighborhoods.”

“What security footage?”

“General CCTV. Businesses, traffic stops – the kind of cameras you find all over the city.”

“How’d you – how’d you get access to that? Did you – did you hack it?” Connor sounded impressed.

“She did, and she led us to you,” Tom said. “Once we were close enough to hear all the shouting and shooting, we knew we were in the right place.”

“But how did you find us, in the streets?”

“I got lucky,” Tom said. “I was moving around like the two of you were, in the shadows, and I saw you cross the road, and I followed you from there.”

When they reached Stacey’s building, Anthony wouldn’t let Tom carry Connor up. He got Connor out of the back of the car himself and supported his weight, carrying him inside and into the elevator. He didn’t wait for Tom and Cindy to join them before he hit the button and closed the doors in their face.

“He seems happy to see you,” Cindy said.

Tom didn’t reply. They waited for the elevator to come back down.

They’re all in Stacey’s apartment now. Tom and Jeffrey are tending to Connor’s leg. They’re in the living room. Cindy stands to one side, close to the kitchen. Anthony is opposite from her, by the window. She notices how he looks down into the street from time to time. Stacey is with her son in his bedroom, making sure he’s sleeping through what is happening in here.

“The bullet’s in deep,” Jeffrey says.

Tom grunts in agreement. They have a lamp angled down over them so they can see what they’re doing. “It’s a 9mm, possibly just a fragmentation of one,” Tom says. “We leave it in.”

“That’s what I was thinking,” Jeffrey says.

“What the fuck?” Connor says, twisting to look at them back over his shoulder.
